This workshop introduces customers to our proven methodology for migrating existing physical servers onto VMware platform products in the form of VMware virtual machines. It also covers moving VMs across different platforms. This workshop is typically delivered as part of a combined VI w/ P2V Jumpstart engagement.

Objectives

• Ensure the understanding of the machine migration process. This includes knowledge on setting up an environment to facilitate migrations, major issues to be encountered, using VMware Converter, and things to consider that can help streamline the process. This is typically done via a demonstration or guiding the customer through 2 migrations, one with VMware Converter performing a hot clone and one with VMware Converter performing a cold clone
• Ensure comfort with the migration process. This is typically achieved by the customer performing a migration with minimal guidance. We then ask the customer to perform additional migrations. We provide general best practices for installation, configuration, and operation of VMware Converter.
• The knowledge transfer is achieved through a PowerPoint presentation and getting a prototype installation up and running for testing and discussion, with interleaving between the presentation and screens from the prototype installation for reference.
• The knowledge transfer may reaffirm some customer assumptions, or more likely change some customer preconceived assumptions after the intricacies of VMware Converter and the migration process have been explained in detail.

This workshop is dependant upon some experience with VMware virtual machines and the customer having an existing platform (VMware Infrastructure, Server, or Workstation) installed and available for use.
